Atlantic rowers head through half-way

In a race that includes boats of pairs and fours, a solo rower is leading the way. The 2009 Atlantic Rowing Race, from La Gomera, the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean, has been going for nearly five weeks and most of the boats are now through the half-way point of the 3,000 mile race.

The 2009 Atlantic Rowing Race is finally under way. After a series of delays, mainly caused by bad weather, 31 ocean-going rowing boats have left La Gomera in the Canary Islands. The boats will row across the Atlantic Ocean covering roughly 2,500 nautical miles to end up in Antigua.

Spending 24 hours on the indoor rowing machine has set in motion a quest to row the Indian Ocean. Croatian national team member Petar Lovric and partner Vatroslav Zovko took turns rowing for two-hour intervals over a 24-hour period partly as a way to simulate the situation of rowing the Indian Ocean.
